Tomahawk Desktop 2.0 Beta1 is based on FreeBSD 7.2 sources, but it is not based on a FreeBSD distribution. It is a separate operating system by itself with its own package management system, etc. Please note, this is a developer preview. That is, there is no GUI shell such as KDE although we have installed more than 500 packages. The KDE 4.3.3 that we tried to install developed a greeter crash issue when try to run the KDE. The KDE 4.4 Beta1 develops compilation errors. We need the community collaboration to fix the KDE issue and release the Tomahawk Desktop as a proper desktop operating system. Tomahawk Desktop 2.0 Beta1 comes with Qt 4.6 released version. Therefore, it is more sensible for all of us to try the upcoming KDE 4.4. Please try to install the KDE 4.4 on Tomahawk Desktop and let us know what need to be patched to get the KDE up and running. As soon as we get the KDE up and running, we intend to make another beta release with default GUI enabled so that normal users also could give it a try. All user processes in Tomahawk Desktop runs in real-time which is a prerequisite for professional audio and video creation. We use the OSS (Open Sound System) as the audio back-end. The Gstreamer is already installed and it is the audio back-end we use for KDE phonon. At present stage, you can play FLAC, OGG or WAV files with GStreamer on Tomahawk Desktop. Tomahawk Desktop comes with a FTP server and the SSH server. You can transfer files and you can remotely login. We will soon set up mailing lists for communication. Please post your comments and thoughts about Tomahawk Desktop and how do you find it in our Facebook corporate page, we appreciate it very much. NOTE: Download, install and use of Tomahawk Desktop is subject to your agreement with the Tomahawk Desktop End-User License Agreement, which specifically allows free for personal use.
