  8. Network Access
What is the default network access mode in Tomahawk Desktop?
It is Dynamic IP-Wired as the default network access mode if your computer is a desktop system or Dynamic IP-Wireless if you have a laptop.

That is, when you connect your desktop computer to a network switch/hub using a network cable and reboot your computer, Tomahawk Desktop requests an IP address and other network details from the DHCP server and automatically configure itself. Similarly, if it is a laptop, Tomahawk Desktop requests an IP address and other network details from the DHCP server and automatically configure itself. Therefore, you do not have to change any network setting in the Tomahawk Desktop, just start accessing the network.

If you need to assign a permanent IP address to your network card, switch network accessing from wired to wireless, etc. you need to change the network access mode.

I cannot get the correct display resolution, why?
The reason you don't get the display resolution you want even after you specify it to the Tomahawk Desktop is, either your graphic chipset/graphic card doesn't support that resolution or the graphic driver involved doesn't support that resolution.

You may download the latest driver for your graphic hardware from the manufacture (eg. Nvidia, ATI, etc) and install.

To resolve the graphic hardware issue, the video BIOS of your graphic chipset/graphic card could be reprogrammed to support the resolution you want.

If your graphic chipset is 800 or 900 series Intel graphics chipset, click here to learn how to update the video BIOS.

For other graphic chipsets, ideally check with the graphic chipset manufacturer.

If you still cannot get the correct display resolution, you may change your graphic chipset/graphic card. IMPORTANT: Before you do this, please refer to what is the proper procedure to change the graphic card?.

NOTE: If you cannot get the graphical screen after following this procedure, you may need to install a driver from the graphic card manufacturer. Please follow Nvidia or ATI driver installation procedure as a guidance.

Where do I make Xorg settings?
In Tomahawk Desktop, /etc/X11/xorg.conf is auto regenerated (if necessary) at boot up time after checking hardware. This is to include hardware information it finds in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf without any human intervention. Therefore, do not edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf directly.

The /etc/X11/xorg.conf.in is used as a template for this process. You may place your values in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.in. If you edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.in, then delete the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart the computer.

When you run regenXorgconfin, it regenerates the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.in, the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.in.template is use as a template for this process.

The regenXorgconfin is useful if you change your graphic card (eg. Matrox to Nvidia) and need to regenerate the xorg.conf without manually editing anything.

  12. Distribute Tomahawk Desktop
How do I participate to distribute the Evaluation version of Tomahawk Desktop via BitTorrent?

NOTE: There are two methods, you may implement either one, but not both. Please see the Advantageous and Disadvantageous of both methods before implement.

Method 1

Advantageous: Simple to implement.
Disadvantageous: Takes long time to start Tomahawk Desktop.

a) Make sure you have configured your network or computer so that outside BitTorrent requests can reach your computer. For more info, please read this.

b) Login to Tomahawk Desktop as root.
c) Use your preferred text editor (eg. Kate) and open the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file.
d) Add following to /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

sudo -u <yourUserName> bittorrent-console --save_as /home/<yourUserName>/TDS-1.1-i386-dvd.iso http://www.tomahawkcomputers.com/download/TDS-1.1-i386-dvd.iso.torrent --max_upload_rate 25 >& /dev/null &

e) Replace <yourUserName> with your user name. That is, your login name. The 25 is the upload speed in Kilo Bytes. Adjust this depend on your upload bandwitdh. Do not exceed your upload bandwitdh. Eg. If your upload bandwitdh is 350Kbps, that is, 43.75KBps. Use about 30 to 35 as your --max_upload_rate.
f) Now if you do have the full TDS-1.1-i386-dvd.iso file, copy it into your home directory. If you don't have it, once you restart your computer, it will first download it.
g) If you copied the TDS-1.1-i386-dvd.iso file, please make sure you have write permission on the file. Run following as root to set correct permissions:

chown <yourUserName>:<yourUserName> /home/<yourUserName>/TDS-1.1-i386-dvd.iso

h) Restart the computer.

Method 2 (Recommended)

Advantageous: Does not slow down the Tomahawk Desktop start. Seeding starts 5 mins after system boot up.
Disadvantageous: Requires more skills in Unix.

a) Make sure you have configured your network or computer so that outside BitTorrent requests can reach your computer. For more info, please read this.

b) Click Konsole button on the KDE Panel to open a Konsole.
c) su and login as root.
d) Type fcrontab -e and press Enter.
e) Add following:

# run (n) minutes after system bootup
@volatile,first(5) 12m /usr/bin/sudo -u <yourUserName> /usr/bin/bittorrent-console --save_as /home/<yourUserName>/TDS-1.1-i386-dvd.iso http://www.tomahawkcomputers.com/download/TDS-1.1-i386-dvd.iso.torrent --max_upload_rate 25 >& /dev/null &

Note: Press i to enter into Insert mode.

f) Replace <yourUserName> with your user name. That is, your login name. The 25 is the upload speed in Kilo Bytes. Adjust this depend on your upload bandwitdh. Do not exceed your upload bandwitdh. Eg. If your upload bandwitdh is 350Kbps, that is, 43.75KBps. Use about 30 to 35 as your --max_upload_rate.
g) Save the fcrontab.

Note: Press Esc to exit from the Insert mode, :wq! to save and exit.

h) Now if you do have the full TDS-1.1-i386-dvd.iso file, copy it into your home directory. If you don't have it, once you restart your computer, it will first download it.
i) If you copied the TDS-1.1-i386-dvd.iso file, please make sure you have write permission on the file. Run following as root to set correct permissions:
