Google Earth on Tomahawk Desktop

The significance of Google Earth on Tomahawk Desktop is the secure installation. The Google releases the Google Earth as binary executable file (GoogleEarthLinux.bin).

Unix/Linux offers two options for installation of programs. The first option is, you may install the Google Earth as a normal user (ie. as you) in your home directory. It really doesn't matter where you install. That is, you have write permissions on programs you install. Any program you run, such as mail clients, specially Internet browsers, etc. run as you, therefore, can delete or modify the Google Earth program if a hacker manage to exploit a security hole in a web browser, so that Google Earth may display something else instead of geographic information. It is obvious installing any program in your home directory is inherently insecure, in additions to that, it wastes disk space. That is, if another user wants to enjoy Google Earth, has to install Google Earth in his/her home directory, thereby, wasting disk space.

The other installation option on Unix/Linux is, install the program as root (ie. Super user). In this way, you avoid the security vulnerability we explained earlier and do not waste disk space. But when you install as root, especially a closed source program, worse yet, an beta version, you compromise the security of the entire system!

This is where the Tomahawk Desktop comes to your rescue. Tomahawk Desktop offers a third option by solving all issues we explained earlier. That is, in Tomahawk Desktop, you don't install a program as a normal user nor as root (the super user). You install Google Earth as a package-user. Now even if a hacker manage to exploit a security hole in a web browser, he cannot damage or modify the Google Earth installation. The package-user installs programs centrally, therefore, in Tomahawk Desktop you don't waste disk space.

If Google releases a newer version of the Google Earth, before you install the new version, you can remove the old version by leaving no trace by scanning the hard disk by the name of the package-user who installed Google Earth. Tomahawk Desktop is designed from the ground up to facilitate secure program installation and utilization of disk space efficiently.

Tomahawk Desktop is probably one of the best and safest operating system to enjoy Google Earth.
